LUCERNE VALLEY — A 38-year-old Victorville man was killed when he was struck by a vehicle late Tuesday, California Highway Patrol officials said.

The man was wearing dark clothing and walking in the westbound lane of Highway 18 west of Willow Wells Avenue in Lucerne Valley at approximately 10:40 p.m. Tuesday, CHP officials said in a Wednesday news release. The roadway was not illuminated in that area.

A 24-year-old Phelan man driving a 2010 Dodge Charger driving westbound on Highway 18 didn’t have time to avoid hitting the man, who was struck by the Charger’s front bumper, authorities said.

San Bernardino County Fire Department paramedics responded and pronounced the man dead. No other injuries were reported.

The victim's name has yet to be released, pending positive identification and notification of next of kin.

The incident is still under investigation by the Victorville CHP office.
